Long-running Elephant Walk is located on the south-east edge of Phalaborwa (Limpopo province). The place is a bit inconvenient if you don’t have your own transport as it’s over 20 minutes walk from the centre and bus station. It’s a useful base from which to explore the northern edge of Kruger National Park – but again, it pays to have your own transport as it’s expensive to hire here.
There is a 10-bed dorm as well as a couple of twin rooms, a double and a family cottage. The private rooms have mosquito nets but the dorm does not. We were bitten all over the night we stayed here. The mattresses are a bit soft, but the dorm is clean as is the rest of the place. The common hot water showers and toilets are a bit scarce; there’s just one of each in the main house for potentially 16 guests.
The common kitchen is equipped with kettle, microwave, electric cooker/grill, fridge and freezer. There are two sitting areas: One small one indoors, tastefully decorated with African carvings and a larger one outside with a small TV. The Wi-Fi wasn’t working when I was there, but they do have a book exchange. Not a bad place to stop over in, but could do with nets in the dorms.
