Hostel Tenerife – La Orotava

Hostel Tenerife in La Orotava can be reached on foot from the bus terminal in the city center, although this can be quite an exhausting hike up a steep hill with heavy luggage. Upon arrival we received a warm welcome by Andy, a long-term guest of the house who is helping out here and there. Being a chef by profession, Andy is eager to prepare a 3-course menu about once a week for small money. Unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to try it as we already had to move on. Manfred, the Austrian hostel owner, is offering tours by car to Teide, Anaga National Park and other locations on the island for 29 EUR. The hostel itself has a proper kitchen, dorm rooms with bunk and even single beds and a nice rooftop terrace with tables and chairs with excellent views on the sea, Puerto De La Cruz and snow-covered mountains on the other side. La Orotava has a few churches, a big supermarket and a few shops. It’s certainly nice to see, but not really a must do like La Laguna (the old capital of Tenerife).

It is very possible to walk from La Orotava in the mountains at 400m altitude all the way down to Puerto De La Cruz with sea and beaches. This takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes. Just walk downhill from the hostel as far as you can get. Then find the bridge that is bending to the left, crossing the highway. You will see a bus stop on the other side of the highway at the end of this bridge. From there continue walking a lonely sealed road towards a building at the end in about 500m distance where the street bends to the left. In just about 100-200m notice the small path with cobble stones on your right – some Poinsettia shrubs with heights up to 2-3 meters and other interesting plants lining this cobblestone road. Walk down further this lonely path and at the end continue walking downhill. You will soon get into the city of Puerto De La Cruz. You might not feel the urge to walk all the way back up the mountain, so you better catch a bus back to La Orotava from the bus terminal in Puerto De La Cruz where buses leaving for La Orotava regularly.
