Backpacker Hostel Hervey Bay

Koala Backpackers Hervey Back (now NOMADS Hervey Bay) located just beside the beach is basically a good place to party and for doing a trip to Fraser Island. The hostel offers it’s own 4WD Fraser Safaris and works with a local butcher who get’s you the meat for the BBQ to be taken on the island (stored in an ESKY). The rooms of the hostel were ok, but not always clean and safe, also the kitchen and bathrooms were a big mess sometimes. The outside terrace is nice and gets frequently visited by a cute possum in the evenings.

The YHA Hervey Back (Colonial Log Cabins, now Colonial Village YHA) is located close to the beach, but a bit far from the city. However, the hostel offers a free shuttle service to the city in case you need to buy something. The wooden cabins/bungalows are surrounded by a beautiful garden with a lot of plants, flowers and fish ponds – just lovely to see. The rooms and beds were very comfortable and everything was very clean, the staff very friendly. Just a minute walk from this place and you will be at the beach. In the right season (we visited in January) you can find hundreds – if not thousands – of small little crabs here that move away on your approach, getting closer than 5-10 meters. Quite a spectacular sight!
