Burkes Paradise Hostel is situated 10km south of central Bulawayo in the suburb of Burnside. This family-run hostel and campground is a welcome respite from the long 7 to 8 hour haul by bus. Most backpackers would have undertaken to get here from either Victoria Falls or Harare. Basic, but clean & comfy, the dorm has 6 beds and there are twin & double chalets as well as camping in the huge gardens.
There is nowhere to eat, so communal kitchens are provided and there’s also a ‘corner store’ with basic provisions (including crisps & chocolate) – should you come unprepared. The beds that look as if they’ve done years of service are – nevertheless – very comfortable. The shared showers & toilets are clean and there’s plenty of hot water. Mozzie nets are provided. There are public minibuses (combis) that pass by the end of the road to the city centre for US$0.50 – a 10 minute journey.
