Backpacker Hostel Johannesburg

Dusk Till Dawn Backpackers in Johannesburg is welcoming little place in the eastern suburb of Kensington and a wonderful place to stay. The location on a hilltop, overlooking the greenery of eastern Johannesburg with gorgeous sunrises, is worth the stay alone. You are also staying in a house with the owners’ family, so this is a hostel with a difference. More like a home stay.

There are two double/family rooms and a 10 bed dorm. The dorm is comfortable with good mattresses and a lamp and table for each pair of bunks. The free Wi-Fi just about reaches the dorm, but you’re better off in the large living room for a strong signal. The common toilet and shower is just outside the dorm and there are lockers provided with locks available from reception.

The living room has a large screen DSTV, although the pool table was about to go back to the shop when I stayed there. This will give quite a bit more leg room to lounge in the comfy sofas. There is a tiny, eccentrically decorated bar which leads out into the back garden, where there are tables and chairs from which to watch the sunrise and great views and a plunge pool. The common kitchen is clean and well equipped, but all common areas are shared with the family. There is a massive DVD and book library and the whole house is scattered with artworks and sculptures. Just up the hill to the satellite tower, a 5 minute walk, you’ll get a fantastic view into central Johannesburg with the CBD skyline.

Homestay-like hostel with fantastic view!

Ghandi’s Backpackers in Johannesburg is located in a building that has stood since 1880. This backpackers place is one of the leaders in the field of over 20 such places in Johannesburg. Run by a chain-smoking German owner, this beautiful old house is kept clean and tidy and boasts a variety of rooms from twin and doubles sharing or en suite to a 16 bed dorm. All the rooms are clean and well kept, the dorm is also en suite. It is self-catering here and the common kitchen is large with just about everything you could hope to find.

The cosy sitting room is situated in the old house, whilst outside in the front garden there is a small swimming pool and the very large bar. Brightly decorated with flags and posters, the bar acts as the reception also. It has a pool table and computer terminal. This is where the router is for the free Wi-Fi, so a strong signal. There is a free continental breakfast, which guests help themselves to in the kitchen. The secure guesthouse provides a free pick up from the airport or Park station in the centre if booked in advance and also offers a paid for taxi service cheaper than the street cabs. City trips and tours further afield can also be booked here.
