The rustic Joy River Backpackers sits right opposite the entrance to Bourke’s Luck Potholes Nature Reserve, in Moremela village. It has beds for eleven people in total, including a 5-bed dorm. The dorm consists of 4 single bunks and a double as its housed in a rondavel. There is a long table for belongings and there are plenty of angle-poise lamps as well as power points. The shower and toilet block are very clean and the hot water is supplied by a wood-fired stove. So book at least an hour in advance so it can be lit.

There is a very basic kitchen near the dorm that has a couple of gas burners, kettle, toaster and fridge, but there aren’t many pots, pans or utensils. There is free tea and coffee, vegetarian meals can be provided with a little advance notice. There are shops close by with some basic supplies should you wish to self-cater. The kitchen also doubles as an impromptu reception and dining space. There is even a pizza oven outside.

Not to everyone’s taste, this place is very rustic, but it’s comfortable and friendly. It’s handy for the Bourke’s Luck Potholes, the challenging Belvedere day hike, the 18km from the Three Rondavels viewpoint and the hiking trails at the Forever Resort.
