Zombie Cucumber in Vilanculos is set back 50m from the beach in a beautifully tended garden decorated with wacky sculptures and artwork. It is a cheap and comfortable place to base yourself right near the town centre. A 18-bed dorm arranged in a circular, open-sided gazebo is the budget choice. All beds have mosquito nets and comfy mattresses. The free WiFi signal just about reaches the dorm, but is available in all common areas. There is a sitting area gazebo in the middle of the garden with wicker chairs, a dartboard, bookshelves and notice board – but unfortunately no power sockets.
The common shower has loads of hot water, but bring your own towel and soap. The toilets are clean. There is a small swimming pool by the bar/restaurant that doubles as the reception desk and there are lilos, tables and chairs for sitting out. There is a long list of dishes including home-made pizza, but the prices are a little high for those on a tight budget. There are also tastefully decorated A-Frame chalets and a new mid-range group of rooms at the back of the garden called Casa Jules. The main reason travelers stop in Vilanculos is for the boat or dhow trip around the Bazaruto Peninsula. These can be organised at Zombie Cucumber as well as horseback riding, snorkeling, etc.
