After closing in 2014 with the owner running a hostel elsewhere in South Africa, he’s now back in Sabie and Billy Bongo Backpackers has re-opened. Handy for Kruger National Park and the Blyde River Canyon, this little place has been completely refurbished and was still undergoing final touches when I stayed. The hostel is in a house north-west of the town centre, on the road to three of the region’s waterfalls.

There are a couple of double rooms, a family room of a double plus two bunk beds and a 6-bed dorm. As it’s quite a small place, so it pays to book ahead as there are no other budget alternatives in Sabie. As the place is new, everything is clean and comfortable. The beds have duvets and the mattresses are firm. The hot water showers are solar powered and the dorm is self contained, in that it has its own toilet, shower and small kitchen as well as TV. The other rooms all share common toilet and shower. There is also a large kitchen for guests.

You’ll have to go 2km into town to eat out, so self-caterers are well provided for. There is a big sitting room with TV, a pool table, table football and a small bar with plunge pool. The owner has many years experience of running backpacker hostels, so knows what he’s doing and it shows.
