Backpacker Hostel North-America

Cheap Backpacker Hostels Around The World

Cheap Hostels in North-America

The Auberge C’mon Inn Hostel in Moncton has a great location, extremely helpful, bilingual staff and competitive priced rooms. The hostel is located within walking distance to many restaurants, a good brewery that sells local craft beer, many supermarkets and the river. You can’t get a much better location! Check in time is after 4pm, and check out is 10.30am. Staff are happy to store bags before or after checking in/out.

What makes this hostel great is the vibe, the facilities and common areas. There are several common areas that provide a nice atmosphere to chill out and to meet other travellers. These common areas include a balcony with seating, a book exchange area, two fully equipped kitchens and a big lounge area. They are complete with free access to a computer, as well as good WiFi throughout the entire property. Despite all the common areas, this hostel is not a party hostel, and has a quiet time after 11pm.

Breakfast is included in the price and includes fruit, yogurt, toast, jam and waffles. Coffee and tea are complimentary and available throughout the day. The hostel offers both private rooms and dorm rooms, including a female only dorm. Dorm rooms are comfortable, however the bedding is a little old and thin. Overall, the value of the hostel is amazing for the area and the facilities and services are great.

Great value for money!

Fat Salmon Backpackers in Port Alberni is a funky retro hostel in the small(ish) town of Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. The hostel is family owned – the owner lives below the actual hostel. He is also a builder who built and designed most of the rooms which gives the hostel a very unique and fun feel to it. The actual building is bright yellow and cannot be missed. There is also a good and cheap Chinese restaurant next door.

The hostel is definitely a party hostel, so if you are looking for a quite place, this is not the place for you. This is the place to be if you are looking to meet new people or looking to find a few drinking buddies.

The hostel only offers dorm rooms. There is either a large 10 bed dorm, or a “couple’s” dorm which has 2 bunkbeds in it (2 couples in 1 room). All bathrooms are shared. There is a communal kitchen and dining area, some seating outside and in the front reception area. Hostel staff is happy to help with any tourist information or information about onwards travel.

There is free tea and coffee, however they had run out of coffee during our stay. There is also a ‘free box’, where other travellers have left various things – including free camping gear from travellers that had hiked the West Coast Trail.

We could not connect to any WiFi – the reason given was not too clear. Not sure whether the internet was not working during our stay or whether they didn’t provide free WiFi at all.

The hostel is about a 25 minute walk from the bus stop and only a 5 minute walk to the port from where you can catch a ferry down the inlet to the coast.

Friendly and helpful staff

Great place to meet people, whether you are travelling solo, in a group or as a couple

Locally owned and run hostel (not apart of a chain) – it’s always nice to support locally owned businesses

A bit messy – the whole hostel could need a deep clean, especially the kitchen

WiFi not working or unavailable

Only cash accepted – No credit or debit card payments

Family-run party hostel.

HI Victoria Hostel is a great hostel for all types of travellers. The hostel is extremely clean, modern and secure. The communal areas are huge and include a large kitchen, dining area, bike storage area, reception desk with tourist information, games room with pool table and TV room. There are both dorm rooms and private rooms available.

This is not a party hostel, and there are some drinking rules, such as, only wine and beer in common area, no ‘hard spirits’. However, the hostel hosts many different events, including movie nights with free popcorn, walking tours, game nights and music/performance nights.

The overall vibe is friendly and safe. Whether traveling alone, in a group, or with your partner – you will be able to meet other friendly people and like-minded travellers.

We absolutely loved the hostel’s attitude towards energy saving, recycling and being environmental aware. They really were putting in all the effort to reduce their negative impact on society and the environment. The WiFi however did not reach the top floor rooms. In the communal area on the first floor, the WiFi also dropped out randomly, after which you needed to login again. The hostel staff did say they were aware of the problem and were working to fix it.

The hostel is a part of the Hostelling International (HI) group, which means the hostel has to adhere to a certain standard and offer certain amenities. You can stay at the hostel if you are not an HI member, however you have to pay 10% more. If you do become a HI member, you also get discounts on the Greyhound bus, Moose travel tours and varies different restaurants and bars. It’s definitely worth doing if you plan on staying and travelling around Canada for a while.

Extremely clean and modern, with very large communal areas

Safe and secure

Inside bicycle storage

Plenty of information about cycling around Victoria & Vancouver Island

Free tea, coffee and toast in the morning (not offered in all HI hostels)

Clean place with good facilities. Recommended!

(Last Reviewed: September 2015)

Hostel International (HI) Whistler is very modern and clean. The hostel itself is located out of Whistler Village (about 8km). There is a local bus, but it’s definitely easier if you drive and having a car. There are some great hiking trails nearby, as well as the Whistler Brewing Co (local brewery), which is worth checking out.

The hostel offers both dorm and private rooms with ensuite. The rates change throughout the year, depending on the high and low season. The ski season is definitely the most expensive time to visit Whistler.

The hostel is a great place to meet people, with people staying there of all ages and backgrounds. There are laundry facilities, communal kitchen, dining room, TV room, games room, with pool table, cafe, tourist information and BBQ area, as well as free parking.

One great thing about staying at Hostel International (HI) hostels, you can also expect a hostel of a high standard, with great facilities and amenities and plenty of tourist information. HI Whistler, was no different. If you plan on staying at a lot of hostels, or HI hostels, it is definitely worth investing in the HI membership, as it saves you 5%, as well as 25% on Greyhound buses in Canada, and a few other discounts.

If you don’t mind being outside of Whistler Village, then it’s a great place to stay.

Huge, fully equipped, communal kitchen, with lots of fridge space.
Free parking! Unheard of in Whistler – most places charge $20-30 a night for parking.
Super modern, which means everything is in working condition and clean.

No quiet time as people were making a lot of noise into the early morning.
The beds were uncomfortable. Not great if you have any back problems.
The WiFi was not the best. Constantly, being kicked off the network and having to rejoin.
Located outside of the village. Not recommend unless you do have a car.
