The YHA Youthpalace Davos definitely stands out of the crowd. Its rich history, unique setting and excellent amenities make it a great choice of accommodation in the Swiss Alps. The house was originally built in the 19th century as a luxurious spa/health institution for international guests. In the 2000s the house was bought by the Swiss YHA and refurbished by a well known Swiss architect and interior designer. The original feature of 2 meter wide balconies is still present, so guests can enjoy the fresh clean air as well as the splendid views lying on a hammock. Davos, being on 1600m altitude and covered with heaps of snow during December and March, has created some of the world best ski slopes providing a mecca for snow sport enthusiasts.

You can not believe that it is actually a youth hostel as the site where it stands calls for a 5 star hotel. It is situated on a long winding road high up on the mountain side amongst private houses and chalets easily accessible by car. Most of the rooms are double bed rooms with a few 4 bed and 6 bed dorms available, too. The dorm rooms are rather small in size, but all rooms have an en-suite bathroom and on the south facing side all have a balcony attached to them with a splendid view. All rooms have in-room lockers, for each bed one – they easily operate with a 2 Franc coin as a deposit. There is plenty of space in the common area on the ground floor, offering the longest specially manufactured black leather sofa in the world. A sports corner with table football and pool table, a kids zone with books and blackboard to draw on. A TV sitting area with cable connection and WiFi access.

You could walk your way up to the hostel which is about 800 metres away, but if you are carrying heavy luggage, aren’t physically fit or just too tired for walking, it’s best to call the hostel or let them know in advance that you’d like to be picked up, free of charge. The Internet connection is best downstairs, in the rooms the connection is rather limited to a mere zero. Depending on the time of visiting, it can be a quiet and relaxing place (mainly over the summer), during high season (winter time and Christmas holidays) it’s usually fully booked with a lot of groups enjoying the snow during the day and the party locations during the night, so it can get noisy sometimes.
